More than likely, you didn’t move into your home with the expectation that it would serve as a home office, schoolroom, gym, as well as a living space for relaxation, comfort and rest. We’re adapting our lives to the pandemic, and our homes are forced to follow suit. Here are some tips on how to get the most out of your space.
1. Spring Cleaning! Be ruthless.
Take this time to really go through your belongings and sort out what is essential and what can get the boot. You’d be surprised what you can accumulate after just a year! Try to remove and throw away as much as you can. This way, you have a clean slate to build on what you really need.
2. Invest in storage and organizational help!
Look for furniture that is multi-functional, so you’re maximizing your space effectively. Even just some extra boxes, tubs and shelving to get your stuff consolidated will help minimize the appearance of clutter and in turn, make you feel like you have much more space (especially on the coveted counter-tops!).
3. Create cleaning “rituals”. Follow them every day with NO excuses.
Allot time to put things away for you and your family each day. This may seem like a simple task – and it is -- but it can be easy to look over and allow things to steadily accumulate. Especially with kids, get into the habit of stacking notebooks, collecting pens and putting them into a holder, and throwing away any discarded materials from the day. This will not only make the space a lot nicer but will create a clear divide from the school/workday and the time for decompressing and relaxing.
4. Use interior design “illusions” to make your space appear larger.
Adding mirrors for increasing visual depth and light to rooms, installing floor-to-ceiling window drapes to create the appearance of taller ceilings, utilizing very light and very dark colors add contrast, and displaying large artwork on walls are just a few tips to make a room appear much larger than it is! There are many tried and true tips that interior decorators love, and we will get more into depth with these on a later blog.
5. Keep things separate, but consistent.
Keep your spaces consistent. Find one spot for your workouts, one spot for work, and one spot for schoolwork. This will stop the overlap of your objects moving around all over the place and causing clutter and will allow you to get in and out of the “zone” with ease. You’ll also have the opportunity to customize your space accordingly, since you know precisely where it will be.
This is by no means an exhaustive list, but we think these are some easy-to-approach tips that will help make your space more friendly towards its many (new) functions! Let us know if you have any tips that have helped you to transform your space during this time.
